Q3 Career Prep: Getting Ready Before the Fall Rush

The middle of the year can feel like a weird in-between season for your career. Some companies are finalizing budgets, others are juggling vacations and year-end planning, and it’s easy to tell yourself you’ll “get serious about a job search in the fall.” But hiring doesn’t stop just because the calendar says Q3 – and the candidates who use this time well are often the ones who are most ready when the right role opens up.

If you’re in accounting, finance, HR, or operations and you’re even thinking about a change before year-end, Q3 is the perfect time to get your house in order. Use this window to tighten your story, update your materials, and reconnect with your network – so you’re not scrambling when an opportunity lands in your inbox in September.

Five ways to get prepared for the rest of Q3

1. Clarify your target roles.
Instead of “I’ll look at anything,” choose one or two specific titles you’d seriously pursue – Senior Accountant, FP&A Analyst, HRBP, Operations Manager, and so on. Specificity does two things at once: it makes it far easier to tailor your resume and LinkedIn profile, and it helps recruiters understand exactly where to market you instead of guessing.

2. Refresh your resume with outcomes, not duties.
Update your most recent roles with bullets that highlight results – cost savings, process improvements, error reduction, hiring wins – rather than just listing responsibilities. Aim for 3-6 strong, metrics-driven bullets per recent role. If a bullet could apply to anyone who’s held your title, it’s probably a duty, not an outcome – that’s the one to rewrite.

3. Tidy up LinkedIn.
Make sure your headline clearly signals your target direction, your “About” section tells a concise story, and your experience lines up with your resume word-for-word (recruiters and hiring managers both notice when it doesn’t). This is also a great time to ask for a few fresh recommendations or endorsements tied to the work you actually want to keep doing – not just whatever your last role happened to include.

4. Do a light market check.
Spend some time looking at current postings in your city and salary guides for your level, so you have a realistic sense of titles, ranges, and required skills. Use that information to identify any small gaps you can close in the next few months – software to learn, a certification to start, or experience you can build where you are right now.

5. Warm up your network.
Reconnect with a few former managers, colleagues, or mentors with a simple check-in message rather than a hard ask. Let them know what you’re working on and that you’re open to a move before year-end, so you’re top-of-mind if something opens up on their team.

The goal isn’t urgency – it’s readiness

None of this is about pressuring yourself into changing jobs immediately. It’s about making sure that if the right role appears in August, September, or early Q4, you’re ready to step into the process confidently instead of rushing to update everything at once while also trying to prep for interviews.

The people who land the best roles this fall are rarely the ones scrambling in October – they’re the ones who spent August getting quietly ready.
